Some days ago, I was looking for another potential farmer that will partner with Bebo Nigeria to help with our integration of Nigeria small scale farmers work in  Nigeria and West Africa, I put a call to one of our Operator to seek for more information on a potential farmer who was heavily involved in poultry farming, to be honest, the farmer am inquiring about is into large scale poultry farming, he supplies about 15 northern states with all forms of poultry product, but to my surprise, the operator told me that the farmer is now out of business, in fact he is no longer interested in poultry farming, I inquire further to learn about other farmers in the environment, he emphatically told me that everyone he knows has abandoned poultry farming, or they are about to close down their farm. I ask the operator why this is happening when the government is heavily interested in agriculture, and he told me that this is happening because most farmers are running into debt, high cost of production and other business that surface in the state has impacted and affected farmers to the extent of abandoning their poultry. This increased unemployment and discourage young people from engaging in poultry farming due to the high financial risk involved in poultry farming.

Here I will highlight simple ways young people can start-up their farm and learn through the process.

In starting your poultry farming, you need to consider your location. Location is very vital for the successful running of your poultry farm; in locating your farm you need to consider the local laws that exist in states in Nigeria, never locate your farm in a residential areas, establishing your farm in a residential areas might open your farm to serious litigation which might bring down your business, consider getting a location where you can easily afford and maintain.

Take this, in starting your poultry farm, always study your market, and you need to know the type of breed that is in demand in the market and the prices that are attached to them.

Conducting a study of your market will lead you to make a business plan; most businesses or are failing because they don’t have a written action plan, which they follow strictly. If you want to be successful in poultry farming, you need to have a severe action plan that will guide your activity. An action plan that entails what you intend to achieve in your business, it will guide your activity, take your business plan very seriously, it make or mar your poultry business. A farmer that does not have an action plan is not a severe farmer that’s why most of them close down their farm or run into heavy losses and severe debt. In writing your business plan, you need to consult an expert who is well experienced to help you in writing your business plan.

Construct your poultry house, but at this point, if you are a small scale farmers, I will advise that in getting your location, you should lease a place where there is an existing poultry house, this will limit your expenses and save cost, rather than spending money to construct a poultry house. You can this through friends or referrals from your contact at a very considerable rate.

Get good feeds from government accredited centers, or if you understand the technicalities of producing your feed, it will be best to provide your feed yourself, will be cheaper, and saves cost. Proper nutrition will determine the growth, health and poultry production.

As a young farmer, for you to run a successful poultry business, record keeping is very vital. Some farmers have incurred substantial losses because they refuse to keep proper record of their farms. Write down and maintain accurate data on the production rate, sales, and profit-making data.

Poultry farming is a very profitable business, if you have the right mindset and make use of expert to help and guide you through your activities.
